Mouse in the house

Franklin Pest Solutions

Any pest professional will tell you that there is rarely such thing as ‘one’ mouse. A female house mouse is ready to reproduce at the age of six weeks and can produce as many as a dozen babies every month. With teeth that never stop growing, rodents must chew to file their teeth in order to survive. Hungry teeth- filing rodents in your home are hazardous to more than just your property. Mice and rats carry diseases, putting your health at risk.

Danger to Your Health

As if chewing through your wires and cereal boxes is not enough of a headache, rodents are known for carrying 200 different human pathogens. Your stuffy nose and congestion might be more than a seasonal cold. Living amongst mice puts your body at risk of the diseases and parasites they carry. Learn how to identify signs that mice have moved into your home and learn what to do to get them out and keep them out.

Rodents for Renters
Mice do not have preference in real-estate. They are happy to live anywhere warm where food is close by. Apartment buildings, condos, two-flats and all other multiple unit residences may find it additionally challenging to eradicate mice. This is because there are so many more opportunities for them to thrive. It is recommended to first take note of signs of pests and then contact your landlord or building association to inquire what solutions are available.

Tips on Keeping Rodents Out of Your Home
1. Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens
2. Screen vents and openings to chimneys
3. Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, including areas where utilities and pipes enter the home, using caulk and/or steel wool, and don't forget to seal up points of entry into the garage
4. Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly
5. Keep attics, basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry
6. Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows
7. Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains that provide the perfect breeding site for pests
8. Inspect items such as a boxes, grocery bags and other packages brought into the home or car
9. Regularly inspect under the hood of vehicles for gnawed materials, nests, droppings or frayed wires
10. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and keep shrubbery trimmed and cut back from the house
